Pepper - Liver Problem putdown

Our cat is now going to proly be put down becuase of liver problems.
we got Pepper at the end of May 2008, and he was perfectly fine then.
He took his time to get used to his new house, and settled right in.
But about 2 weeks ago, he slept an entire day on his blanket, without eating.
We thought, "OK, its just for one day. See what he does tomorrow..."
Well, the next day he did basically the same, but got up once to use the litter box.
We took him to the vet, they gave us anti-biotics for a 'cat fight puncture wound' as they said.
After a week, he didn't improve, so we took him for trip 2.
They finally did blood tests, and the results came in yesterday.
They now tell us he has a liver disease or something.

SO WE HAVE 2 OPTIONS:
---------------------------------------
1) Keep him on anti-biotics forever, cheap + might not work
OR
2) get an operation done, expensive + might not work

We want to get the operation to see if they can do anything, but there's no guarantees.

Problem is, we don't exactly have the money right now because we've been upgrading our home.
New lights in kitchen, new woodstove/fireplace, new windows to come very soon, new TV (i hope, because are current one is 25 yrs old), and new ceiling fans.

We don't know how much the bill could be for the operation yet (my dad's gonna find out morrow), but it'll be well over $500.

I am setting up a paypal account for myself. My relatives suggested this, as they live in Ontario, and can't exactly walk over to our house. They could mail, but they said its easier to do it online.
My parents idea was that if we get enough to cover the total cost of the operation, we'd do it. If not, all the people who donated will get their money back.
